Videos

I make short science communication videos on a variety of topics, from undergraduate research on the Potomac to COVID-19 monitoring.

Wastewater COVID-19 Monitoring at George Mason

In 2021, George Mason began monitoring wastewater as an effective method of catching COVID-19 outbreaks early. This research was conducted by PEREC faculty at Potomac Science Center, which is how I got lucky enough to tag along.

Water Quality Data Mapping

This is a video depicting water quality data mapping, which is conducted annually on the Potomac River by Chris Jones. I recorded this in the summer of 2019 and sat on the footage until quarantine had me missing field work. I filmed most of it one-handed, as I was also keeping time and writing data every four minutes. It was, to the say the least, a challenging way to film.

Undergraduate Interviews

I have a new video that I’m immensely proud of. I interviewed Tom Hutchinson, an undergraduate at George Mason. He gave me so many great soundbites to work with and I hope other people find his story as inspiring as I do.
Here’s another video where I interview Keith, a George Mason Undergrad, about his experience doing research in Maine. This was an exciting video for me to produce, because I wrote one of Keith’s reference letters for that internship. I was thrilled to hear how much he enjoyed it.

Undergraduate Research

I produced a series of videos highlighting research that five undergraduates conducted on the Potomac River in 2017. The first two videos were premiered at the VA Sea Grant Graduate Symposium on February 9, 2018.

Occoquan River Clean-up

I participated in a clean up of Occoquan Regional Park this week. Dr. Dann Sklarew kindly invited me to come kayaking with his class (I know, my job sounds so terrible) and I put together a short video from the Gopro footage I shot while on the water. We found quite a bit of plastic trash, including a “Graduation 2018” beach ball.

What is PEREC?

I put together a short video explaining what the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center is. This was a question a lot of the faculty told me they had to field, so I wrote a short narration and used miscellaneous footage and photos to illustrate PEREC’s research and community outreach.

Ocean 180 Video Challenge

My video was one of ten selected for the Ocean 180 Video Challenge. The top three videos will be selected by 6-8th graders in a few weeks. Kids are tough critics, I’m more nervous about them then the adults! All the videos are definitely worth checking out.

Sampling in the Potomac River

This is one of the first video I made, as a learning exercise. This provides information on how zooplankton are sampled in the Potomac.
An early video I made as I learned to edit together different clips. This depicts sediment sampling in the Potomac River using a ponar.
